Description

Threaded Cap is a type of pipe fitting used to seal the ends of threaded pipes. They are usually shaped like a cap and are screwed onto the end of a pipe to prevent the escape of liquid or gas.

Applications

Threaded Cap is widely used in many different industries including:

  • Oil and Gas : To seal oil or gas pipes.
  • Chemicals : To prevent the leakage of hazardous chemicals.
  • Construction : To seal pipe ends in water supply and drainage systems.
  • Food and beverage industry : To maintain cleanliness and prevent contamination.

Standards

ASME B16.11 : is a standard that covers the requirements for dimensions, materials, tolerances, test methods, and inspection conditions for forged steel threaded fittings. This standard ensures that Threaded Caps are manufactured to meet the requirements for safety, performance, and durability in industrial applications.

  • Materials : Threaded Cap can be made from a variety of materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and other alloys.
  • Size : Threaded Cap sizes vary from as small as 1/8 inch to as large as 4 inches or more.
  • Connection type : Female thread according to NPT (National Pipe Thread) or BSP (British Standard Pipe) standards.

  • Nominal Size : This is the nominal pipe size, not the actual size.
  • OD (Outside Diameter) : Outer diameter of Threaded Cap.
  • H (Height) : Height of Threaded Cap.
  • Thickness : The thickness of the material at the threaded cap.

Threaded Cap Material Summary

Material Type Characteristic Common Applications
Carbon Steel (A105) – Durable – Oil and gas, chemicals, construction
– Good heat resistance
– Affordable price
Stainless Steel (304) – Good resistance to corrosion and rust – Food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical industry
– High durability, easy to clean
Stainless Steel (316) – Outstanding corrosion resistance – Harsh environments, marine, chemicals
– Resistant to strong acids and alkalis
Brass – Good corrosion resistance – Water supply and drainage systems, food industry, maritime
– Good electrical and thermal conductivity
Nickel Alloy (Monel) – High corrosion resistance, even in marine environments – Chemical, petroleum, maritime industry
Inconel – Withstands high temperatures and corrosion – Aviation, chemical, oil and gas industry
Aluminum – Light, good corrosion resistance – Automotive, aviation, construction industry
– Easy to process and manufacture
Alloy Steel (A182) – High mechanical strength, withstand high pressure and temperature – Oil, gas, chemical and energy industries
Plastic – Light, good corrosion resistance, non-conductive – Water supply and drainage system, food and chemical industry

Note:

  • Carbon Steel (A105) : Commonly used in industrial applications due to its high strength and good heat resistance.
  • Stainless Steel (304 and 316) : Preferred in industries requiring high corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning.
  • Copper (Brass) : Often used in water supply and drainage systems and the food industry due to its good corrosion resistance.
  • Aluminum : With its lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties, aluminum is often used in applications that require light weight.
  • Plastic : Used in applications that do not require high mechanical strength but require corrosion resistance and electrical non-conduction.
